Full to the brim with history and military heritage, the Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded in 1681 by King Charles II. A home for those no longer able to serve because of injury or age, the Royal Hospital grew into an iconic institute in the heart of London and now houses nearly 300 veterans from all corners of Britain.

Often seen out and about, the Chelsea Pensioners are distinctive for their scarlet uniforms and represent the ongoing legacy and sacrifice of soldiers. With its long history and continual work to support veterans, the Royal Hospital Chelsea is a home, a community and a symbol of national pride.

The grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea extend for 66 acres, and whilst they’re not freely open to the public, you can explore the Royal Hospital in a unique 90-minute tour led by a Chelsea Pensioner. Experts on the Royal Hospital’s history, the tour guides take visitors on a journey through the building where they visit the historic dining hall, the stunning Wren Chapel and the iconic Figure Court.

Festive Delights

This December, the Wren Chapel (named after its architect, the famed Christopher Wren) will open for two magical carol services. These services feature traditional carols by the choir and readings by Chelsea Pensioners, followed by a mulled wine reception.

Originally designed by eminent architect Sir John Soane, the Soane Stable Yard is a hub of activity in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Accessed through our Chelsea Gate, the Stable Yard holds an interactive museum, a post office and the incredibly popular Heidi Café, all open to the public. Newly redeveloped thanks to generous funding by the National Heritage Lottery Fund, these additions are popular with both Chelsea Pensioners and local residents alike, providing a quiet escape from the bustling city.

This December, the Soane Stable Yard will be hosting a lively selection of events for all ages. Family activities range from Christmas card making and gingerbread decorating to interactive storytelling with a Chelsea Pensioner. These all-age activities are the perfect chance to get children excited for the Holiday season, as well as introduce them to the iconic Chelsea Pensioners.
