It doesn’t get more British than tucking into some fish and chips in London. Here are our catches of the day…

 

1. The Seashell of Lisson Grove

 

Serving some of the freshest, tastiest and highest quality fish and chips in London for more than 60 years, The Seashell has built quite a reputation. Pop in for a takeaway or dit down for a three-course meal in the restaurant. The family-run restaurant is loved by locals, tourists and even celebrities. 2. Rock & Sole Plaice

 

Established in 1871, they know what they’re doing at Rock & Sole Plaice. Here in the heart of Covent Garden, you’ll find locally sourced, sustainable British fish which is prepared using their traditional 145-year-old recipe. 3. The Golden Hind, Marylebone

 

The Golden Hind restaurant has been serving Londoners in the heart of Marylebone since 1914. That’s more than 100 years of experience in all this battered. 4. Golden Union

Shopped ’til you dropped? Refuel at this retro chip shop just moments away from Oxford Circus. It offers all the classics: cod, haddock and plaice with those all-important chunky chips. There are also plant-based alternatives to fish and sausages on the menu too, as well as gluten-free, plant-based saveloy and chips. 38 Portland St, W1F 7LY.

 

5. Poppies

 

Authenticity is the name of the game for East End founder Pat ‘Pop’ Newland. At Poppies, you’ll get a classic fish and chips, complete with side dishes including jellies eels and homemade mushy peas. From the 1950s uniforms to the retro memorabilia lining the walls and music tailored to each shop, stepping inside Poppies is an experience of its own. Branches in Spitalfields, Soho and Camden.
