Cameron Mackintosh’s revival of Oliver! dazzles at the Gielgud Theatre, transforming Dickens’ London into a feast of music, colour and character.

Cameron Mackintosh’s dazzling new production of Lionel Bart’s beloved musical Oliver! has returned to the West End, lighting up London’s Gielgud Theatre with heart, humour and a host of unforgettable songs. Opening to a flurry of five-star reviews, this reimagined version of the Dickensian classic has reaffirmed why Oliver! remains one of Britain’s most enduring and best-loved stage musicals.
All-Star Cast
Brimming with energy and West End pedigree, the production stars Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q) as a charmingly roguish Fagin, Ava Brennan (Les Misérables, Hamilton) as the fiery and compassionate Nancy, and Aaron Sidwell (Henry VI, Wicked) as the menacing Bill Sikes. Rising star Billy Jenkins, known to TV audiences from the BBC drama Dodger, brings youthful cheek and swagger to the role of the Artful Dodger, while Philip Franks (The Rocky Horror Show, Witness for the Prosecution) lends warmth and gravitas as Mr Brownlow. Together, they anchor a superb ensemble cast that bursts with character and spirit.
Produced and newly revised by theatre impresario Cameron Mackintosh, Oliver! is directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, whose storytelling flair and visual wit have redefined musical theatre. Bourne, working alongside co-director Jean-Pierre van der Spuy, ensures that this version balances grand spectacle with emotional depth, while maintaining all the joy, grit and pathos that have made Oliver! an audience favourite for generations.

Behind The Scenes
The creative team reads like a who’s who of stage design talent. Lez Brotherston’s set and costume design give Victorian London a strikingly
atmospheric look (grimy yet full of life), while Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs’ lighting design washes the stage with warmth and shadow, guiding the audience through the city’s alleyways, taverns and workhouses. Adam Fisher’s sound design and George Reeve’s video design lend cinematic texture, creating a fully immersive experience that feels both intimate and grand.
Musically, the production shines brighter than ever. The original orchestrations by William David Brohn, adapted by Stephen Metcalfe, are rich and dynamic, while music supervision by Graham Hurman ensures every note resonates with the power and emotion audiences expect from a West End classic.
The Music Lives On
Lionel Bart’s sensational Olivier-, Tony- and Oscar-winning music remains the heartbeat of the show, including Food, Glorious Food; Consider Yourself; You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two; I’d Do Anything; Oom Pah Pah and many more. Each number bursts with melody, spirit and character, transporting audiences to a world that is at once grimly Dickensian and joyously musical.

Enduring Magic
First staged in 1960, Oliver! has long been a jewel of British musical theatre; it was the first West End musical to transfer successfully to Broadway and, later, the winner of multiple Olivier, Tony and Academy Awards. Its success endures because it captures something universal: the courage and optimism of a boy who dares to ask for more, set against the teeming backdrop of 19th-century London.
This new production pays homage to that legacy while bringing a fresh perspective for a new generation. Bourne’s choreography injects pace and modern energy, while Mackintosh’s careful revisions sharpen the storytelling and deepen the emotional core.
With its irresistible songs, sweeping staging and heartfelt performances, Oliver! is everything a great West End musical should be: bold, moving, funny and gloriously entertaining.
Whether you’re rediscovering Oliver! or seeing it for the first time, this revival will have you humming all the way home; and perhaps, like Oliver himself, asking for just a little bit more…
