Summer in London has a way of turning even the simplest moments into lasting memories. Long evenings stretch into golden sunsets, parks fill with picnickers, outdoor stages come alive and every corner of the capital seems to offer a reason to linger a little longer.
So, whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to rediscover old favourites, these are the summer experiences that deserve a place on your London bucket list.

Take a Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus

If you’re looking to get your bearings early in your stay, a hop-on hop-off open-top sightseeing bus remains one of the best introductions to the capital. Not only does it connect many of London’s most famous landmarks, it also brings the city’s extraordinary history to life through expert commentary as you travel between Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and beyond.
With the freedom to jump off whenever something catches your eye and rejoin later, it’s an easy and enjoyable way to experience the capital while making the most of the glorious summer sunshine.

Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace

Few experiences feel more quintessentially London than watching the Changing the Guard ceremony unfold outside Buckingham Palace. With scarlet tunics, bearskin hats, military bands and centuries of royal tradition, it remains one of the capital’s great spectacles. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and enjoy the pageantry as the King’s Guard hands over responsibility for protecting the monarch’s official residence.

See a Show in the West End

London’s theatre district is one of the city’s greatest cultural experiences, and this month offers a whole host of shows featuring huge stars. Whether you are drawn to a musical, a dramatic revival or a brand-new production, nothing beats stepping out after a show with your spirits lifted.

Take the Plunge

Few things feel more refreshing on a hot summer day than a dip in an outdoor pool. While you could opt for a splash about in the free and family-friendly lido at Royal Victoria Dock (24 Jul-16 Aug) or do laps in a 50-metre open-water pool surrounded by skyscrapers at the recently opened Sea Lanes Canary Wharf, Hampstead Heath Ponds have been drawing swimmers for centuries.

There are dedicated ponds for both men and women that attract devoted regulars, as well as a mixed pond where Harry Styles has been known to swing by for a dip. So, grab a towel and try not to disturb the ducks!

A Table in the Sun

Before heading back into town, make time for an alfresco lunch. Whether it’s people-watching at The Ivy Market Grill in Covent Garden, dining beneath the elegant umbrellas at Scott’s in Mayfair or discovering a hidden courtyard tucked away in Soho, summer dining outdoors remains one of London’s simplest pleasures.

Another memorable perspective awaits at Sky Garden. Taking over the upper floors of the Walkie-Talkie building, this indoor garden offers free admission (advance booking recommended) and some of the finest views of London.

The Everyman‘s canalside pop-up cinema in King’s Cross is one of those fixtures that signals summer is definitely here. There’s no need to book a ticket. Simply rock up, grab a sundae or a chocolate-dipped strawberry or two, and settle down as a varied programme of cinematic greats plays out on the big screen overlooking the water.
Think Paddington in Peru, Some Like It Hot and The Devil Wears Prada.

Music in a Secret Garden

It might have been designed as a space “fit for meditation” by Robert Weir Schultz in 1889, but for three days each summer, pretty St John’s Lodge Garden in The Regent’s Park provides an intimate setting for magical musical moments (10-12 Jul).
Highlights include Pegasus Opera’s journey through Rossini and Mozart via a sprinkling of Gershwin (11 Jul), and Orchestra for the Earth indulging audiences with movements from Dvořák’s epic New World Symphony (12 Jul).

Each summer, the courtyard at Somerset House transforms into one of the capital’s most spectacular open-air concert venues.
The programme opens with fast-rising global star Naïka and continues with festival favourites Lightning Seeds, American alternative rock royalty The Flaming Lips and Mercury Prize winner Benjamin Clementine delighting the crowds in this iconic setting (16-26 Jul).
Music lovers should also keep an eye on BST Hyde Park, which once again welcomes a stellar line-up of global artists to one of London’s most famous green spaces.

Dance the Night Away at Kew

One of the most joyful nights London has to offer is back. With palms reaching its glass ceiling, the Temperate House at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse in the world. But for one night this month, it becomes one of the capital’s most unique dancefloors as a lucky few enjoy a Silent Disco.
So, grab a ticket, pop on wireless headphones and switch between either DJ Mande and DJ Talk to Frank to find your groove (17 Jul).

Straddle the Globe

No summer visit to London would be complete without a trip to Greenwich. At the Royal Observatory, visitors can stand with one foot in the eastern hemisphere and the other in the west on the world-famous Prime Meridian Line before exploring the home of Greenwich Mean Time.

Pack a Picnic for Primrose Hill

After everything the city has to offer, a picnic on Primrose Hill as the sun sets remains a summer classic.
Grab nibbles from a local deli or Primrose Hill Food Market (Sat only), climb to the top of the hill as the afternoon drifts into evening, and watch London transform before your very eyes. A protected viewpoint, it offers a sweeping panorama of Canary Wharf, The Shard, the BT Tower and, of course, St Paul’s Cathedral.

As the day draws to a close, few experiences capture the magic of a London summer better than watching the skyline glow in the evening sun, whether from Primrose Hill, Greenwich Park, Sky Garden or high above the city on Up at The O2.
