Islington Square has opened a summer terrace with a new food market

The terrace, which features deckchairs and plants, is in a pedestrianised square and tree-lined boulevard tucked away behind a Grade II-listed entrance off Upper Street.

It is on the site of the former North London Royal Mail Sorting and Delivery Centre.

The square is home to shops, restaurants, a gym and a luxury Odeon cinema.

What’s on

It hosts socially-distanced events outdoors, such as yoga and puppet shows by the Little Angel Theatre (24-27 Aug & 31 Aug-3 Sep).

The weekly Boulevard Market launches on 4 September, in collaboration with Real Food Markets.

Initially, the market will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday to 18 October, although there are plans to run it for longer.

Twenty independent traders will sell handmade accessories, flowers, street food and drinks.

Buy ingredients

Browse for ingredients such as comté and gouda from the Borough Cheese Company, kimchi from Pantry & Deli and single estate Italian olive oil from Woop Evo. You can also buy fresh produce and juices from Turnips Fruit & Veg, and Korean ingredients from Bombom Market.

Stop for lunch

For lunch, order steak and chips from The Beefsteaks or fresh pasta from La Tua Pasta. Just make sure you save space for St John Bakery’s doughnuts and pastries, or Sicilian cannoli from Casa Cannoli. If you follow a special diet, stop by Noodo, a new gluten-free bakery. Most items are also vegan and paleo-friendly.

Stay for drinks

Go early and order London Grade Coffee made from organic beans from a single estate in India.

Alternatively, go later in the day and enjoy cocktails from Mix & Muddle or spirits from London Craft Liquor.
